The 2017 Golden Radish Award ceremony was attended by over 330 school nutrition leaders, school administrators, teachers and farm-to-school supporters from across the state of Georgia to celebrate excellence in farm-to-school programs. The ceremony was hosted by the Golden Radish Award Committee, including Georgia Organics, Georgia agriculture, education and public health departments, and University of Georgia Extension. CAES News

Georgia’s agriculture, education and public health departments, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and Georgia Organics came together at the historic Georgia Railroad Freight Depot to celebrate Georgia school districts with outstanding farm-to-school programs. Seventy-five school districts, serving more than one million students, are now participating in farm-to-school programs. These districts served more than 97 million school meals with local food items during the 2016-17 school year.

Irrigation Outreach
As part of an irrigation efficiency study by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, a 29-person team of social scientists, agricultural economists, climatologists, agricultural engineers and UGA Extension agents from the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is studying agricultural irrigation in order to increase the water-use efficiency in row crops common to southern Georgia.

Katie Murray, the new face of the academic program at the University of Georgia Tifton campus, joined UGA-Tifton this summer as the new student recruiter, just in time to welcome this semester’s crop of students.
If you want to develop a farm-to-school program at your child's school, county and state UGA Extension personnel are ready and willing to work with you and your child's teachers to move your farm-to-school efforts forward. Extension personnel can connect schools with local farmers, provide curriculum and instruction on nutrition education, and assist with the implementation of school gardens. CAES News

Over the past decade, the numbers of school gardens across Georgia has grown rapidly, and these gardens have become vital to the teaching process. Once seen primarily as a way to teach students about the importance of fresh vegetables and proper nutrition, the school garden has become a classroom resource that covers much of the curriculum.
