Women’s Staff Leadership Institute 04/08/25 Krista Richmond
The seventh cohort of the Women’s Staff Leadership Institute celebrated its graduation with a reception March 25. “I want to say first, congratulations to all of you graduating,” said Stacy Jones, associate vice president for public service and outreach and WSLI co-sponsor. “I hope that as you continue to walk as graduates and alumnae of this program that you pay attention to the fact that you’re taking some amazing journeys.”
As a graduate student at UGA, Dean Kopsell helped construct a greenhouse that still stands at the Riverbend Greenhouse Complex and is used by the UGA Horticulture Club. CAES News

For Dean Kopsell, associate dean for academic and faculty affairs for the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, moving to Athens has been like coming home. Kopsell assumed leadership of the Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs one year ago, following the retirement of former Associate Dean Josef Broder, who served as a faculty member at CAES for more than 40 years.

A Doctor's Journey 01/23/25 Aaron Hale
Dr. Colby Ruiz was a teenager when he watched his first surgery. He volunteered in the operating room at Valdosta’s South Georgia Medical Center, where his parents worked as nurses. Ruiz could have ended up in any of the hospital units except, at 14, he really didn’t want to wear the pink “candy striper” uniform of most hospital volunteers. When Ruiz learned that OR volunteers wore green, he was all in.

Transfer Program 11/12/24 Emily Cabrera
The Transfer Pathways Program is opening new doors for rural students who dream of attending the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES). In partnership with Wiregrass Georgia Technical College and Southern Regional Technical College, students who complete required coursework at these institutions can transfer to CAES to complete bachelor’s degrees in one of three majors — agribusiness, agricultural education, and agriscience and environmental systems.

Innovation Gateway will continue supporting startups and technology-based small businesses affiliated with the University of Georgia—thanks, in part, to the renewal of the Federal and State Technology Grant. In partnership with the Center for Black Entrepreneurship, Innovation Gateway is one of 49 grant recipients in 2024, receiving $200,000 to support proposals for Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer grants, which are awarded to startup businesses engaged in developing advanced technologies.

Krysta Harden, former United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture and current president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, will be the speaker for the 2024 D.W. Brooks Lecture and Awards, an annual event hosted by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. From her parents’ farm in Camilla, Georgia, all the way to Capitol Hill, Harden has been a strong advocate for agriculture.

Driving down a bumpy road in rural Honduras, Rolando Orellana looks out at the countryside dotted with freely roaming cattle, citrus trees and workers tending fields of crops. Orellana, who has spent the last 23 years in the United States, said Honduras will always be home in his heart. It's where he was raised, helping his father grow coffee, and where his family still lives.

When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.

A new club for students at the University of Georgia aims to celebrate the connections between Black students and the outdoors. Through on-campus discussions and off-campus field trips to state parks, Get Outdoors offers experiences couched in a context that can help students gain a deeper understanding of nature, sustainability, outdoor activities and the history of the land.

University of Georgia alumna Kirsten Allen was named a 2023 Quad Fellow, making her one of 100 international applicants in the fellowship’s inaugural cohort. The Quad Fellowship is a scholarship supporting interdisciplinary innovation in science and technology by connecting graduate students from the four Quad countries: Australia, India, Japan and the United States.
